Another interaction with England was the boom in US cotton production that would reach its peak in the 1850s.<br /><br />With the exception of the brief Panic of 1858, the 1850s would be a period of growth. The 1860s of course are marked by the Civil War and Reconstruction. The war would forever alter the American economy with its boost to industrial production and the increased importance of the federal government. Before the war, most Americans interaction with the Federal government was restricted to the delivery of mail.
